You need to balance the cents-per-litre (c/L) discount with network coverage, monthly card fees, and whether the discount applies to the specific type of fuel your fleet uses.

In my experience, the standout performers right now are Shell Card, FleetCard, and WEX Motorpass, but there are several other highly competitive options depending on your local network.

If pure discount value is your main priority, the Shell Card is incredibly hard to beat. At the time of writing, they’re offering an exceptional promotional rate for new customers.

New customers can secure a massive 7c/L off both petrol and diesel for the first six months using the promo code CPM7FOR6. To make the deal even sweeter, the monthly card fee is waived during this promotional period. Once the honeymoon period ends, you still receive a very solid ongoing discount of 4c/L off premium fuels and 2c/L off regular unleaded.

I consistently suggest the Shell Card because it combines high discount rates with excellent coverage. You can use it at Shell, Reddy Express, OTR, Liberty, and Westside stations, giving you access to roughly 1,600 locations nationwide. If your drivers regularly pass these stations, the savings stack up rapidly.

If you run a fleet that frequently passes BP stations, the BP Plus card is a heavyweight contender that rivals Shell for top-tier discounts.

At the time of writing, BP Plus is offering up to 8c/L off eligible fuel for the first six months, alongside the ability to earn 3x Qantas Points on eligible fuel. After the promotional period, the standard discount is typically 2c/L off regular fuels and 3c/L off premium grades. With access to over 1,400 BP sites across Australia, coverage is rarely an issue. The BP Plus card also boasts 0% AMEX processing fees and a 51-day interest-free period.

At the time of writing, Ampol is offering several options for new customers, including 8c/L off for 10 months or 6c/L for 18 months. Standard ongoing rates are highly competitive if you use premium fuels: 4c/L on Amplify Premium petrol, 3c/L on Amplify Premium diesel, and 2c/L on regular fuels.

Ampol boasts Australia’s largest single-brand fuel network with approximately 1,800 locations. The ability to collect Everyday Rewards points on fuel and in-store purchases adds significant value beyond the pump discount.

If your fleet operates primarily in major urban centres across NSW, ACT, VIC, QLD, and WA, the 7-Eleven Fuel Pass is a fantastic option with a very aggressive introductory offer.

At the time of writing, you can enjoy 7c/L off at 7-Eleven stations for the first 11 months. After that, tiered discounts kick in based on volume, starting at a minimum of 2c/L and reaching up to 4c/L. While the network is smaller at roughly 640 locations, the 11-month promotional period is one of the longest on the market. It also offers up to 44 days of interest-free credit and a low $2.50 monthly card fee.

When I speak to businesses that operate heavily in regional areas or have drivers crisscrossing the country, WEX Motorpass is almost always my top recommendation for coverage, even if the pure fuel discount is lower.

WEX Motorpass offers a flat 1c/L discount on petrol and diesel. You might look at that and wonder why it makes the list. The answer is coverage and consolidation. WEX Motorpass is accepted at over 6,500 locations, and it can be used for non-fuel expenses like servicing, tyres, and car washes. For many businesses, the time saved in the back office far outweighs an extra cent or two at the pump.

If you have local access to independent networks, both Metro and United offer compelling options. The Metro Petroleum Card offers a strong 5c/L discount at Metro branded sites for the first three months, and can also be used at over 5,800 Motorpass terminals (though transaction fees apply outside the Metro network). The United Card is currently offering 7c/L for the first six months for new customers, with ongoing tiered discounts between 1-2c/L based on volume.

In my opinion, adopting a fuel card is a non-negotiable strategy for any serious business. If you want the best fuel card discount at the pump right now, the Shell Card, BP Plus, and AmpolCard are the clear winners.
