What is a universal fuel card?

A universal (or network) fuel card is accepted across multiple fuel brands rather than being locked to one, which matters most for businesses whose drivers can’t guarantee they’ll be near a specific brand. WEX Motorpass, for example, is accepted at over 6,500 sites nationally, covering roughly 90% of Australian fuel sites including BP, Ampol, Shell, 7-Eleven, United, Mobil and most independents. FleetCard Classic offers similarly broad coverage. The trade-off is that universal cards usually carry a flatter, smaller per-litre discount than a single-brand card’s promotional rate, in exchange for not having to plan routes around where the card works.
